Florida

Febuary 15th we headed off to the airport, and were on our way to Clearwater beach, FL. Matt, Lyndsay, Cody, Laila, & Jaben, Jared, Tyelene, and Kadri, and then Pam and Dave were already down there. Brett and Kim were not able to go becuase they were expecting the birth of a little girl. Austin did great on the plane, I was worried. But he did good, he slept on both flights all the way down, only waking up as we came down, I think it might have hurt his ears, but I gave him a bottle, and he was fine.
In Florida, it was alittle cold and windy, but still much better then Michigan. It was great being with everone for a whole week. We ate all of our breakfast, lunches, and dinners together, which was crazy but wonderful. He adjusted very well to a different pace of life for the week. He ate on the go, and slept very well in his stroller. He spent lots of time in his stroller, but he didnt seem to mind.
Austin also got to go swimming for the first time. He seemed to like it, or at least he didnt hate it. He didn't cry at all. It was to cute watching him in the water.
Over all it was a fun vacation, and though he wont remember it, we will always remember our first trip with him. :)

Moving on....

Because I waited so long to start this blog, I cant remember everything that has happened but here is a quick list of some of the highlights....
- He got terrible baby acne around 2 weeks old.
-Also at 2 weeks old he became the worlds biggest spitter. I'm not talking like dribbling milk out after his bottles, im talking projectile, and massive amounts of spit from one bottle until the next.
-At 4 weeks he rolled from his belly to his back. ( He was mad, and threw his leg and tipped himself over, but still he rolled.)
-At 6 weeks He finally started smiling at us when we talked to him (he smiled before that, but I don't think it was intentional)
-Stopped nursing at 6 weeks
-Broke out in hives at 7 weeks (we thought it was due to the formula, but we switched him back to it, and nothing happened so we have no idea why he had hives.)
-Tried adding rice cereal to his bottles, to help reduce his spitting, no such luck. Also tried Zantac, which didn't help either.
-At 11 weeks old he took his first vacation to Florida
- Got his first cold at 12 weeks old
- 3 months old, found his thumb consistently, could find it to soothe himself. He actually would prefer his thumb over his pacifier.
-3 1/2 months old he learned to roll from his back to his belly, and now he does it like a pro. We put him on his back and he's on his belly within seconds.
- It was a little scary though, the night that we put him to bed on his back, and we woke up and he was on his belly. My first thought was, "is he still breathing" terrible feeling to have.

Well that's a quick update, and now maybe I can start on the recent stuff.....

The first 2 weeks

The first 2 weeks we had Austin home, where probably by far the hardest 2 weeks I had ever endured. The first night home, my milk came in, and he couldn't latch on, I was crying because I couldn't feed my child, and he was crying because he was hungry. It was crazy. After we figured that issue out, it got a little better.
For those 2 weeks though Austin would wake up sometime time during the night usually between 1:30 and 3:00 AM wanting to eat, which was fine, I knew I would need to feed him in the middle of the night, what I didn't realize was that he wouldn't go back to bed after I fed him. He would stay up from 2 or 3 in the morning until 8:00 AM. I was so tired. A few nights him and I slept onthe couch. And then because he was up all night, he would sleep ALL day. I would wake him every 3 hours to feed him. Easier said then done.... I never though I would have a problem waking a baby, but I did. We tried everything... striping him down to his diaper, tickling him, wet washcloths, you name it we tried it. It was a rough couple weeks, with nursing, and just figuring out his cries and needs.
But it all worked out, I had lots of help from Chad, his family, and my family. My mom and sis just love him, being the first nephew and first grand child, they can't get enough of him.

Bringing Austin Home

Wednesday Dec. 3rd, we were finally able to bring our little boy home with us. As we got Austin ready to go home, we put him in his "going home" outfit. We were so excited but he was not. He screamed, and screamed. One of the nurses actually came in and asked what was going on, because he was so loud. Apparently he didn't like the outfit we were putting him in. We got him dressed and loaded him up in his car seat, and he fell asleep right away. Chad and I got home with him and we just held him and looked at him, it was wonderful, he was wonderful.

Labor & Delivery

I know this is a couple months late, but I decided that this would be a good way to keep track of everything that happened with Austin.....

I was 8 days over due, and we were preparing to make our trip to the hospital for my induction. So on Sunday Nov. 30th at 7:00pm we were in the process of beginning my induction. After getting settled into the room I would spend the next how many hours in, the nurse explained to me what the night would hold. She told me that she was going to put a pill in me to help soften my cervix. Then 4 hours after that pill she said she would put another one in. She said that these pills usually don't do a whole lot, but its worth a try. Then I was told I would receive a sleeping pill, and sleep for the night. The next day they said they were going to give me Pitocin at 6am to start contractions.
Well....thats not how things happened, Austin obviously had a different plan. I was giving the first pill at around 8:30pm Sunday night. At around 9:30pm, I started contracting, which surprised the nurses. They weren't bad contractions, but definitely figured out what a contraction felt like. They gradually got worse and worse.
The nurse was telling us stories about her labor and how her contractions had gotten worse once her water broke. Chad and I laughed because the week before we kept hoping my water would break, so I said to Chad, Im so glad my water didnt break before. Around 11pm, within 2 minutes of saying that, my water broke. And on came the contractions. They got harder and harder, to the point that I was not able to talk during them anymore, I was purley focused on breathing through them. They were a minute to a minute and a half apart. So pretty much, if wanted to get up and walk around the room, I would have one when I sat up, one when I got to the end of the bed, one when I stood up ..etc. It was terrible, but then the contraction would stop, and I remember thinking, oh I can handle another one, and then during the next one, I remember thinking, I cant do this anymore. It was on and off like this for hours. Finally at around 6am I received an epidural. It was wonderful. I finally was able to get some much need rest, I had been up for almost 24 hours at this point.
At 7am my doctor came in to check on us, and she broke the rest of my water bag, I guess it was just leaking from the top, and they needed to break the rest, but then I pretty much just rested until I was fully dialated.
My mom and sister showed up at the hospital at around 9am or so and hung out in the room with Chad and I. Which was nice, they just kept us company. At around 12 noon, I was fully dialated and ready to push. The nurses told me with first timers it can take anywhere from 1-3 hours to push the baby out. Not me... he was out in about 45 miuntes. At 12:52pm Austin David Shilton was born, weighing in at 6 pounds 14 ounces and 20 inches long. He was beautiful, we fell in love instantly.
Austin was placed on my chest right away, and Chad got to cut his umbilical cord. Then they had to take him off of me because he wasn't crying yet. Right as he was coming out his heart rate dropped alot so they think when he came out he was alittle stunned, so they had to rub him and get him to cry, which was alittle scary. But it was all worth it, he is wonderful....
